the city of Nice wants fewer tourists

(Agence Ecofin) – In France, the City of Nice would like to receive fewer tourists, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, against the backdrop of an outbreak of positive cases. The municipal authorities of this city in the south of the Hexagon indeed called yesterday Sunday, for a closure of the weekend in its area in order to reduce the flow of tourists. The region has the highest infection rate in France (with 7,400 new cases per million inhabitants, every week, according to Covidtracker.fr).

“We need strong measures that go beyond the national 18 hour curfew, either a stricter curfew or a partial and temporary lockdown. A weekend closure would make sense ”, Mayor Christian Estrosi said on local radio.

According to the mayor, infection rates have jumped due to the massive influx of tourists during the Christmas holidays and the rise in international flights (from 20 a day before Christmas, to 120 during the holidays), with little or no not enough screening tests. “We will be happy to have a lot of tourists this summer, once we win this battle, but better to have a period where we say ‘don’t come here, this is not the time’. Protecting the inhabitants of Nice is my priority ”, did he declare.

In the meantime, French health minister Olivier Véran has said the government will soon decide to step up measures to control the virus in the Mediterranean city.

To date, France is the 6th country most affected by Covid-19, with officially 3.6 million cumulative cases recorded (i.e. more than 55,000 cases per million inhabitants), including 3.27 million cases still active, for more than 84,000 deaths.
