The coral reef doesis not only a natural shield that protects Martinicans from swells, it is also a breeding ground for the thousands of species that inhabit it. It is now threatened by a bacterium, which gives white spots on the corals. The alert was given by divers. Coral is bleaching and dying all around the island. The culprit would be a mysterious deadly bacteria, which had already ravaged the reefs of Florida (United States) seven years ago.
Hundreds of diseased colonies
The bacteria were recognized by their preferred target, the “brain coral”, a species that is usually very resistant. The only remedy: an antibiotic paste that is applied by hand to diseased corals. The operation seems very ambitious given the extent of the damage, and is almost unimaginable on a local scale, since hundreds of coral colonies are affected. In the meantime, divers are urged to stay away from corals to limit the spread of disease.
