Merkel wants openings with extensive tests

Bund-Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to gradually relax the current corona restrictions in three areas and link them to the use of immediate tests. Participants in the CDU committee meetings on Monday reported that Merkel said she understood the citizens’ longing for an opening strategy. But such steps would have to be cleverly combined with more tests.

The Chancellor stated that she saw the possibility of “putting together packages” for three different sectors. First personal contacts were mentioned, second the schools and vocational schools and third sport, gastronomy and culture. The retail trade was evidently not mentioned in this context.

“Children, especially younger ones, need each other”

From Tuesday on, a working group headed by Chancellery Minister Helge Braun (CDU) will deal with the details of possible opening paths and prepare the next conference between the Chancellor and the Prime Minister accordingly. Braun told the CDU leadership on Monday that the current virus variants were unfortunately destroying “our good development”.

On Monday, the CDU presidium also discussed the possibility of including general practitioners and company doctors in the vaccination campaign against Corona. Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) pointed out that this step would only make sense if three to five million vaccine doses were available per week, as is the case with a flu vaccination. Spahn announced that corona self-tests could be approved from next week; he also promoted the contribution that rapid tests could make in containing the virus.

The curve of new infections showed up for the fourth day in a row on Sunday – despite the lockdown that has been in place since mid-December. On Monday, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported hardly any change: within one day the health authorities reported 4,369 new infections, a week ago it had been 4,426. At the same time, however, the number of new infections reported within seven days per 100,000 inhabitants (seven-day incidence) continued to rise: to 61.0 nationwide. The day before it was still at 60.2.

Meanwhile, on this Monday after about two months of closure and emergency care in another ten federal states, daycare centers and elementary schools have reopened. Federal Minister of Education Anja Karliczek supports this: “It is good that many schools in Germany are gradually starting classroom teaching again,” she told the German Press Agency. Classroom teaching cannot be replaced by anything. “Children, especially younger ones, need each other.”
