Five members of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad have been sacked for two years for dancing to the song ‘Tumpa Sona’ at Calcutta University. Apart from destroying the heritage of the university, multiple allegations have been brought against them. The syndicate, the university’s highest policy-making committee, made the decision on Monday.
Among the five sacked are several former and current students and TMCP leaders. The picture of Saraswati Puja dancing to the tune of ‘Tumpa Sona’ playing DJ on the College Street campus went viral. A committee was formed to investigate the incident. The report of the committee has recommended punishment against five organizers of Saraswati Puja.
Sonali Chakraborty Bandyopadhyay, vice-chancellor of the university, said, “Those five will not be able to enter any campus of the university for the next two years.”
The sacked are Mani Shankar Mandal, Raja Mandi, Devarshi Roy, Tirthapratim Saha and Roni Ghosh. Mani Shankar Mandal is a former leader of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad and is currently a professor at Sanskrit University.
The convicted TMCP leaders have threatened to file a defamation suit in the High Court after receiving a letter from the university. Mani Shankar said, ‘Some people wanted to stop worship on the campus of Calcutta University. In fact, they want to hand over tools to the BJP against the state government by stopping worship. They claimed that a letter was sent to the university authorities asking for permission to worship Saraswati. Vice-Chancellor Saf said no organization or students were allowed to perform the puja.
Colleges and universities are still closed for fear of spreading corona infection. A few days ago, the vice-chancellors had expressed concern that the students from outside would stay in the hostel and the corona could spread from there. The state government has closed the higher education institutions on their recommendation. Even then, members of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad worshiped Saraswati on campus without the permission of the authorities. Students gathered on campus without masks breaking the rules. According to the syndicate, they have ruined the tradition of the university by dancing wildly to catchy songs.
