Emma is accused of plotting El Chapo escaping from prison
The US Department of Justice announced, Monday, the arrest of the wife of the leader of a drug trafficking ring known as “El Chapo” in Virginia.
“The wife of Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loira, leader of a Mexican drug trafficking organization, known as ‘Sinaloa,’ was arrested today in Virginia on charges related to her alleged involvement in an international drug trafficking network,” the ministry said in a statement.
Emma Coronel Esboro, 31, holds US and Mexican nationalities, and was arrested at Dolas International Airport, and is expected to appear in court tomorrow, Tuesday.
In the statement, the ministry cited court documents, accusing Esboro of “conspiring to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana for export to the United States”, in addition to being accused of “conspiring to help Guzmán escape on July 11th from Altepano prison in Mexico.”
The statement also stated that, “After Guzmán was arrested again in Mexico, in January 2016, there are allegations that Esboro participated in planning his escape with others before his extradition to the United States in January 2017.”
Guzmán was convicted by a jury in a New York state court in 2019, for his involvement in leading the “Sinaloa” organization.
