In January 2021, 832 asylum applications were lodged in Switzerland, 159 less than the previous month (- 16%). Compared to January 2020, the number of requests decreased by 33.1% (- 412 units)
In January 2021, the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) processed 1,216 asylum requests. Among them, 257 resulted in a decision of non-entry into the matter (including 217 on the basis of the Dublin agreement), 433 in the granting of asylum and 292 in a decision of provisional admission at first instance . Down 273 units compared to the previous month, the number of pending applications at first instance now stands at 3,579.
Also in January, 138 people left Switzerland under the control of the authorities or were repatriated to their country of origin or to a third country. Our country has asked other Dublin states to take care of 380 applicants. At the same time, 100 people were transferred to the Dublin state responsible for processing their asylum application. During the same period, Switzerland received 305 care requests from other Dublin states, and 36 people were transferred to its territory.
The main countries of origin of people who applied for asylum in Switzerland in January were Eritrea with 147 applications (56 fewer than in December), Afghanistan (119 applications; – 52), Turkey ( 88 requests; – 11), Algeria (81 requests; – 9) and Syria (65 requests; – 36).
Resettlement program
On May 29, 2019, the Federal Council adopted the implementation plan for a resettlement program which plans to welcome, over the period 2020-2021, up to 1,600 refugees in particular need of protection. In January 2021, 53 people entered Switzerland within this framework.
