In 2016, cartel chief Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán was arrested, after six months on the run. On Monday, his wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, was arrested on suspicion of drug smuggling.
This is stated by the US Department of Justice in a press release on Monday night.
“El Chapo”, who in 2019 was sentenced to life in a US high-security prison, leads the Sinaloa cartel. His 31-year-old wife was arrested in Virginia on charges of involvement in international drug trafficking.

According to the prosecution, Emma Coronel Aispuro must be complicit in the smuggling of at least one kilo of heroin, at least five kilos of cocaine, at least 1000 kilos of marijuana and at least 500 grams of methamphetamine to the USA.
She is also suspected of having contributed to “El Chapo” in her escape from the Altiplano prison in Mexico in 2015, as well as having been involved in planning a new escape attempt in connection with his extradition to the United States in 2017.
The FBI in Washington is behind the investigation.
