Google said Monday it would re-allow political ads this week, put on hold last month after the Jan.6 Capitol riots and before Joe Biden was inaugurated as President of the United States.
“From Wednesday, we will lift our rule on sensitive events in order to allow advertisers to broadcast political ads again,” a spokesperson for the tech giant told AFP. “We will continue to rigorously apply our advertising regulations, which formally prohibits the dissemination of clearly false information that could undermine confidence in the elections or the democratic process,” he continued.
The restrictions imposed by Google notably prevented the publication of advertisements highlighting a political leader or a candidate at the federal level (president or vice-president of the United States, American parliamentarians) and state (state governors, members of the ‘a state legislature). Google reacted a week after the violent invasion of Congress by supporters of Donald Trump during the certification of the presidential results.
