(Ottawa) Canada is set to receive a record number of COVID-19 vaccine doses this week thanks to scheduled deliveries from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, as the country seeks to ramp up its vaccination campaign.
The Public Health Agency of Canada says it expects to receive more than 640,000 doses from the pharmaceutical giants this week, which would represent the highest number of doses delivered in a single week.
The previous record was set last week when Pfizer and BioNTech delivered more than 400,000 doses of their vaccine after a month-long lull while expanding a production facility in Europe.
The two companies will ship more than 475,000 doses this week before dropping slightly to 445,000 doses per week in a context where they aim to meet their commitment to deliver 4 million doses by the end of March.
Canada will also receive 168,000 doses this week from Moderna, which ships its doses every three weeks. Unlike Pfizer-BioNTech’s doses, Moderna’s doses are largely intended for northern and remote communities.
The expected influx of vaccines follows Friday’s announcement that the millionth Canadian had received a first dose of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine.
Although the milestone was reached weeks later than expected after almost a month of reduced deliveries, it was nonetheless seen as one of the many positive signs of Canada’s vaccination campaign.
Several provinces have decided to expand their immunization offer beyond the first priority groups in long-term care centers and frontline health workers thanks to the influx of vaccines over the past two weeks.
At least three provinces – Nova Scotia, Ontario and Alberta – have announced details about the immunization of seniors living in the community.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday urged provinces to prepare for the influx of vaccine doses.
A new study also hinted last week that a single dose of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine may be almost as effective as the two doses recommended by the manufacturer, and that the vaccine may not need to be stored at such temperatures. cold than previously thought.
