“It exceeded the best expectations, such was the convergence of positions that it was possible to verify due to the interventions of all EU foreign ministers and the four interventions made during the meeting by Secretary of State Blinken”, commented Santos Silva, in a press conference in Brussels, at the end of a meeting of European heads of diplomacy, which had its new American counterpart as a ‘virtual’ guest.
Augusto Santos Silva explained that, in this in-person Council in Brussels, all 27 European heads of diplomacy intervened in what was the first exchange of views with the new US Secretary of State, invited to participate by videoconference, and who had a initial intervention, followed by three others, at the end of each round of nine interventions by European ministers.
Augusto Santos Silva started by emphasizing “the absolutely crystalline way in which the American administration says:“ we are back ”, in the sense that all partners can again count on the United States in the defense and promotion of multilateralism, on the big agendas global, and “the valorization of the relationship with the European Union and the transatlantic tie, absolutely privileged and preferential” for the (new) North American foreign policy.
The minister also highlighted the great “convergence in the identification of current challenges and threats before which the communities of democracies must converge their positions”, namely in “matters of a more general geopolitical nature”, as is the case with relations with Russia and with China.
“I would say that the meeting not only fulfilled all the extremely high expectations that already existed, but exceeded them”, summed up the minister at the end of the ministerial Council, the only one that is not celebrated under Portuguese presidency, as it is led by the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy, since the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty.
