The investment is made together with Higher Ground, a production company founded by Michelle and Barack Obama and which, among other things, won an Oscar for the documentary “American factory”.
The podcast is called “Renegades: Born in the USA” and is described by Spotify as a “personal and in-depth discussion between two friends”. Hosts Obama and Springsteen start from their own, different experiences in life when they reason about topics such as ethnicity, fatherhood and exclusion as well as marriage. They also discuss a polarized United States – its history, where the country is right now and how they move on from there.
With the words “How did we end up here? How can we find our way back to a more united American history? ” Barack Obama introduces the first episode of the podcast. The former president also takes the opportunity to hand out a boot to his successor, which he describes as “diametrically opposed” to everything he stands for. Above all, it is the handling of the pandemic that is questioned, but also how Donald Trump diluted an already divided United States.
Furthermore, Obama explains how he and Springsteen, who on the surface may not seem to have much in common, share the same view of work, family and the country they love. Springsteen’s raspy voice is accompanied by Obama’s rhetorical accuracy over the 53 – minute first episode where seriousness is interspersed with laughter.
According to the press release, Obama and Springsteen hope to find a way to link their “individual search for meaning, truth and society” with the larger story of the United States. The first two episodes of the podcast were released on Monday. In total, there will be eight episodes.
