Italian Ambassador Luca Attanasio was assassinated on Monday in the Republic of Congo. The ambassadors went to a troubled area of the Congo on an investigative mission with the UN agency.
A senior diplomat said Ambassador Lusa Atanasio was seriously injured in the attack and later died. Sources in Kinshasa said a team from the United Nations World Food Program had been laid off near Goma. Two other people were also killed in the attack. This information was given by Major Guliamo Jike, military spokesman for the province of North Kivu in Congo.
The Italian Foreign Ministry has also confirmed the death of the ambassador. The ministry said in a statement that the attack took place in the town of Goma in Kivu province, which is close to the borders of Rwanda and Uganda. One of his security guards also died of bullets. There were reports that the ambassador and one of his colleagues were advancing with a convoy of UN mission vehicles when he was attacked. The province of North Kivu is considered a stronghold of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a group that includes Islamic rebels and the Ugandan armed faction opposed to President Yoweri Museveni.
