Controversy surrounding the assassination attempt on Bashagu and parliament meeting – events in Libya on February 22

The international edition of the Federal News Agency tells about the main events that took place in Libya on February 22, 2021.

Events

Nearly two hundred migrants have been returned to Tripoli by Coast Guard officers, the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) naval headquarters said.

A ship with refugees capsized near the beaches of the capital on its way to Italy. As a result, 197 people were in the water.

The rescued were handed over to the police for further investigation. In the near future, they promise to deport all illegal migrants to their homeland.

Libya is actually the main transport hub in Africa through which refugees make their way to Europe. The Coast Guard captures migrants and most often places them in special detention centers, from where people often have to ransom. Many are sold into slavery. According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, 2,500 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya in the first two months alone.

Controversy surrounding the assassination attempt on Fathi Bashagu

The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Government of National Accord of Libya Fathi Bashaga commented on the attempt on his life in Tripoli.

“This is not an accident, but a well-planned attack,” the minister said.

In turn, a relative of Ridwan Hankari, who died in the accident, accused Fathi Bashaga of using the story with the attempted assassination to gain international patronage.

According to his cousin Muhammad, everyone knows the scale of the motorcade of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the PNS, and it is stupid to attack him.

“By accusing my family, Bashaga wants international patronage – he must abandon the story of the assassination attempt,” he said.

The Stability Maintenance Service (SPS) of the PNS has issued an official statement on the incident with the motorcade of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. According to representatives of the organization, their car was attacked by militants from the minister’s guard.

“The car with our employees was attacked when its route coincided with the route of Bashagi’s jeeps. As a result, Ridwan Khankari from Az-Zawiya died, and another one was wounded, ”the document says.

Ayub Buras, deputy director of the Union of Right Forces of the PNS, added in a comment to LibyaAlahrar that the incident with Bashagi’s motorcade is under consideration and is awaiting the final decision of the prosecutor’s office and investigative authorities.

“We government agency and comply with the law. The service forces move only within the limits of their locations, ”he said.

The Chairman of the Presidential Council (PC) of Libya, Muhammad Younis al-Manfi, condemned the armed conflict in the streets of Tripoli, provoked by the assassination attempt on Bashagu. According to him, the attack on the convoy of the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the PNS is unacceptable.

“I will not allow the insurgency to cause a new war in the country,” he said.
