According to the statements of the counterintelligence, the Ukrainian, when he was allegedly recruited by the representatives of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, wanted to take the technical documentation for the development and production of the “Oplot” tank. The Security Service of Ukraine calls the information about this armored vehicle “secret”.
The “Russian agent” tried to get an associate of the design bureau for mechanical engineering in Kharkov, which deals with the development of the tank. Under the control of SBU operatives, the ‘agent’ received samples of technical material from the bureau’s officers and handed over photocopies to a “representative of the Russian special services”.
The man was detained at the moment when he received a set of technical documentation, which has a mark for limited access. Criminal proceedings were instituted against the detainee under the first part of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason).
The statement did not state the fate of the “representative of the Russian special services”, who received copies of “secret” documents.
“Oplot” is considered the newest armored vehicle in Kiev. The tank is a modernized version of the T-80UD made in the USSR and there is nothing secret about Russia about it.
The Ukrainian army has stated several times about the serious shortcomings of the “Oplot” tank in conditions similar to real military conflicts. The modified Ukrainian T-48 participated in Germany in 2018 in the tank biathlon “Strong Europe Tank Challenge” and won the eighth place out of a total of eight teams. The crew of the tank complained that day about a malfunction in the loading mechanism, due to which two of the three tanks could not fire.
Former Ukrainian military officer Alexei Bobovnikov, who previously managed the tank platoon, noticed that “Oplot” is not a next generation tank and that “it is not promising”. The production capacity of the plant is not able to produce a large number of tanks. While Ukraine will provide one tank brigade with hundreds of vehicles, ten years will pass, and “Oplot” will become obsolete, he emphasized.
