Now there is no going back: Manhattan investigators are gaining access to Donald Trump’s eight-year tax equations.
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday ordered that the tax assessments of former President Donald Trump for the years 2011 to 2018 be handed over to Manhattan’s District Attorney, Cyrus R. Vance.
Trump has long refused to release these documents. He lost in October in a lower court, but appealed to the Supreme Court, which on Monday rejected the appeal.
“The work continues,” Vance told The New York Times.
Last week it also became known that Vance has brought in reinforcements, in the form of the mafia expert Mark Pomerantz (more about this later in the article).
Cohen testified against Trump
Now Trump’s accounting firm, Mazars USA, must provide the documents to Vance. Manhattan’s district attorney will thus be able to use these documents in his investigation of Trump.
If he finds something unregulated there, he can present it to the grand jury.
– We lawyers always say: The documents can not lie. If the investigators find fraud or criminal activity, and there are documents that can substantiate this, they have a solid case, Berit Berger at Colombia Law School told VG last autumn.
Vance has written in court documents that his office wants to investigate Trump for tax fraud on the basis of news reports and diplomas.
Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen said during an oath in Congress in February 2019 that Trump inflated his values when he wanted bank loans and shrank them when he had to pay taxes.
Started with the hush money
According to The New York Times, Vance’s investigation arose in part as an investigation into the money paid to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal for not speaking publicly about their alleged relationship with Trump.
In July last year, the Supreme Court rejected Trump’s argument that a sitting president could not be investigated.
Unlike all other US presidents in modern times, Trump has consistently refused to publish his tax returns.
The New York Times revealed a few months ago that Trump only paid $ 750 in taxes the year he became president, and that he will have to shell out hundreds of millions of dollars over the next few years.
Mafia lawyer brought in
However, there is nothing to indicate that the tax equations are now being published. The Supreme Court’s decision gives Vance access to the documents, and he can present them to the grand jury, which is considering the case against Trump, but the grand jury operates in accordance with laws on secrecy.
It is the grand jury that decides whether Vance has strong enough evidence to start a criminal case against Trump.
To help with the Trump investigation, Vance recently brought in “mafia lawyer” Mark Pomerantz.
Pomerantz has previously worked for the prosecution, with organized crime, fraud and stock market fraud as his specialty, and is known to have run the case against mafia boss John A. Gotti, who was the boss of the Gambino family.
Investigations against Trump: – He is not protected by law
Several witness interviews have been conducted
Pomerantz was involved in the case, which according to The New York Times “legally defined the term racketeering,” defending Anthony Indelicato. The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) was introduced to curb mafia activity in the United States.
With Pomerantz in the investigation team, continuity in the investigation will also be ensured if Vance does not continue as district attorney after the election later this year.
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post.
Vance’s office has already conducted a number of witness interviews, including with employees of Deutsche Bank and Ladder Capital, where Trump has loans, as well as the insurance company Aon.
As VG wrote earlier in February, Trump’s banker at Deutsche Bank had to quit her job after an internal investigation revealed that she was conducting covert business with one of the bank’s customers, where Jared Kushner is or was one of the shareholders. Rosemary Vrablic has now been reported to the Norwegian Banking Authority.
Also rejected Stormy Daniels
Although the decision in the Supreme Court is a defeat for the resigned president, Trump also won there on Monday. The Supreme Court rejected the porn actor Stormy Daniels’ attempt to resume his defamation lawsuit.
Daniels herself claims that she was the recently resigned president’s mistress in 2006, and has graphically described what she describes as “the worst 90 seconds” of her life: the night she had intercourse with Trump.
– My match is only in the starting phase. People are very upset and will only get more angry at me, she said in a podcast in early February, in conversation with Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen.
She then referred to the lawsuits that have been pending until Trump resigned as president, and which have now been rejected. The resigned president denies the affair, and has himself sued Daniels for defamation.
Trump is also being investigated in the state of Georgia, for the much-discussed telephone conversation with Chief of Staff Brad Raffensperger, as well as by Justice Minister Letitia James in the state of New York.
