Polish customs officers and border guards have detained the largest consignment of smuggled cigarettes from Belarus in the country’s history – worth 6 million euros.
Cargo of illegal smoking was detained on the eastern border of Poland with Belarus, at the border point “Kuzhnitsa” / Bruzgi. Cigarettes were found by searching two trucks with Polish license plates. The waybills indicated that timber was being transported. But behind the boards was a huge amount of cigarettes without Polish excise stamps.
Both car trailers contained more than 1.8 million packets of Belarusian cigarettes worth six million euros. This is the largest case of cigarette smuggling ever recorded at the Polish border.
If cigarettes had entered the black market, the Treasury would have received uncollected taxes in the amount of 10 million euros. Three smugglers, 19, 21 and 55-year-old Polish citizens, have been detained. They face up to 10 years in prison.
