Vladimir Potanin, the main shareholder of the mining giant Norilsk Nickel, broke a new wealth record in Russia, according to the Forbes list, despite the fact that his company was fined heavily for pollution.

Potanin owns 34.54% of the shares of Norilsk Nickel, whose share had recently risen, as the Russian group has benefited from a strong rise in prices of non-ferrous metals such as nickel and palladium of which is the largest producer in the world. Nickel is especially used in electric vehicles, the demand for which is growing worldwide.

The polluting business Potanin

The company is one of Russia’s biggest polluters, according to specialized NGOs, and is responsible for a major disaster in the Arctic last year.

At the end of May 2020, 21,000 tonnes of fuel were spilled on waterways from the tank of a thermal power plant owned by a Norilsk Nickel company. The pollution caused a red tide visible from space near the Arctic city of Norilsk.

Fine to the business in order to adopt more “green” practices

In early February, Russian justice ordered the group to pay a record 146.2 billion rubles (1.6 billion euros) in fines to the Russian federal authorities. The Nornickel group seems to be trying to make its public image greener, especially after this ecological disaster.

In recent months, it has announced the closure of a copper and nickel foundry in the Kola Peninsula, considered one of the most polluted places in the world, mainly due to sulfur dioxide emissions.
