Lukashenko thanked Putin for his help: “The money was not thrown away.”


Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko during a meeting in Sochi, which was also partially broadcast on Russian television. The leaders stressed that their countries work closely together. Russia lent Belarus $ 1.5 billion in September last year in support of Lukashenko, against whom mass protests were taking place, as protesters accused him of stealing the August 9 presidential election.

Lukashenko told Putin, among other things. Russia’s Kommersant newspaper, however, reported that Lukashenko had asked Putin for an additional $ 3 billion loan, which Lukashenko denied. The leaders did not speak about the protests in Belarus, at least in front of television cameras.

Tihanovska: Opposition loses street fight for now
For now, Lukashenko has managed to suppress the protests with great force, which was also acknowledged by the leader of the opposition Svetlana Tihanovska, who is in a statement for the Swiss newspaper Le Time she said yes “the opposition has lost the streets for now because it could not resist the great force of the security authorities.”

Gomel: Long prison sentences for three protesters

Lukashenko: We have overcome the interference of foreign forces
Anti-government protests are otherwise subsiding. Mr Lukashenko recently announced that Belarus had finally managed to overcome foreign interference.
