The Supreme Court allows the New York Attorney’s Office to inspect former US President Donald Trump’s tax returns. Trump had fought to keep the documents secret.
The US Supreme Court does not want to intervene against the transfer of tax returns from former President Donald Trump to the New York prosecutor. The court rejected a corresponding application from Trump on Monday.
The New York Attorney’s Office had requested the documents for an investigation. They should not be published. Still, the chief judges’ decision is a defeat for Trump and a success for Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.
This had instructed the accounting firm Mazars to issue tax returns of their client Trump for more than eight years. Trump tried to prevent that. Vance ›office has already stated that if the Supreme Court doesn’t step in, prosecutors can enforce their orders.
The subject of speculation for years
The investigation also concerns the payment of hush money to the porn actress Stormy Daniels. She is said to have had a relationship with Trump as well as the model Karen McDougal. Trump denies that.
Trump’s tax returns have been the subject of public debate and speculation for years. The ex-president refused to publish them before, during and after his term of office and tried time and again to keep them secret. Last fall, the New York Times reported that Trump had not paid federal income tax for 10 of the past 15 years. According to the report, he paid just $ 750 in federal taxes in 2016. In his first year in office, 2017, he paid just $ 750 again, according to the report.
