George Maior, Romanian Ambassador to the USA, Recalled in the country By Klaus Iohannis. Another 22 Changed Ambassadors

In total, 23 diplomats are on Iohannis’ list today, and there are several other diplomats in important European countries, including Emil Hurezeanu – the ambassador to Germany or the one at the Vatican – Liviu-Petru Zăpîrțan.

Maior’s recall, anticipated in 2019 by Iohannis

The decision to recall George Maior to the post takes place more than a year after President Klaus Iohannis announced in an informal discussion with the press that he will change Maior from office. More precisely in December 2019. Normally, the mandate of an ambassador lasts 4-5 years, of Maior lasted 5 and a half years.

The discussion took place some time after Maior was at the center of a scandal triggered by hearings in the SRI Parliamentary Control Commission, related to his connections with businessman Sebastian Ghiță. In addition, Maior was accused by PSD and ALDE of acting as the electoral agent of President Klaus Iohannis in the United States.

In total, according to a statement from the Presidential Administration, the head of state signed the decrees for the recall of 23 Romanian ambassadors.

The change of diplomats comes after, in September, Klaus Iohannis changed 26 diplomats. Among them were the Romanian ambassador to London, Dan Mihalache, who has since been appointed ambassador to Cyprus, but also Adrian Cioroianu, Romania’s permanent delegate to UNESCO.
