EU foreign ministers, who are meeting in Brussels today, will consider relations with the Russian Federation, which has openly embarked on a course of confrontation with the European Union, as the first issue.
This was stated by EU High Representative Joseph Borrell before the start of the EU Council of Foreign Ministers, Ukrinform reports.
“Obviously, Russia has embarked on a course of confrontation with the European Union. In the case of Mr Navalny, this is an outright refusal to respect (proposed) measures and take into account the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights. We will have an important discussion during the ministerial meeting. I hope that we will be able to do this decisively and in unison. But we will wait for the results of today’s discussion, “said the EU High Representative.
Before the meeting of the EU Council of Foreign Ministers, Borrel said that the response to Russia’s actions would be discussed in Brussels.
Relations between Russia and the European Union have deteriorated in recent weeks.
Thus, on February 5, the Russian Foreign Ministry declared non-grata three employees of the diplomatic missions of Germany, Poland and Sweden. The Russian side accused them of participating in protests on January 23 in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The ministry’s position has drawn criticism from the European Union, Britain and the United States.
Berlin, Stockholm and Warsaw responded by announcing the expulsion of three Russian diplomats.
At the same time, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said after a failed visit to Russia that the European Union would begin preparing new sanctions against Russia in February.
After that, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declared Russia’s readiness to sever relations with the EU.
