Japanese Officials Disciplined For Dinner With The Prime Minister’s Son | World

The scandal over the son of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga emerged recently after the media released a recording of the conversation between Mr. Suga’s son and Japanese Ministry of the Interior and Communications officials.

According to Kyodo News, his son Suga is a shareholder of Tohokushinsha Film Company, which specializes in satellite broadcasting. Mr. Suga’s son is said to have invited officials to expensive parties and gave gifts to discuss licensing for Tohokushinsha Film.

Mr. Suga served as Minister of the Interior and Communications from 2006-2007 and his son was his secretary at this time. Prime Minister Suga has said unknowingly about dinners between his children and officials.
Japan’s national civil servant ethics law prohibits government officials from accepting gifts from shareholders of companies. Director General of Information and Communication Yoshinori Akimoto and Deputy Hironobu Yumoto were recently re-assigned, allegedly for participating in the party.

According to NHK, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Communications has completed the investigation and prepared to submit a report to the House Budget Committee and the National Ethics Council for Civil Servants.

Accordingly, there are 4 ministry officials allegedly violating the code of ethics when attending many parties and receiving gifts and 7 other people receive similar treatment. The four officials mentioned above include Mr. Akimoto, Mr. Yumoto and the two Deputy Ministers in charge of policy coordination, Taniwaki Yasuhiko and Yoshida Mabito.

If the National Ethics Council passes, these officials will be blamed as early as February 24.
