Creating a hybrid work environment where physical and digital locations are combined is the very core of the recommendations in a recent report from the Harvard Business Review Recreating Work as a Blend of Virtual and Physical Experiences.
Interaction between man and machine
Using new technology to increase efficiency makes sense, but it’s just one side of the coin – in the future it’s about making sure people and machines work together. This is one of the reasons why more and more companies are prioritizing employees’ skills development.

How do you meet employees’ expectations in a flexible workplace while meeting the need for physical interaction and creative dialogues between colleagues? Another important question is what skills does the workforce need to be successful in the new digital environment? These are some of the issues that future leaders are considering right now.
Emotional intelligence more important than technical intelligence
In the latest report from Verizon Business on the topic of future work, 66% of senior executives say it is crucial to introduce new technology. At the same time, even more people see emotional intelligence and social skills as key factors for success.
“When business leaders create the workplace of the future, perhaps the most critical task is to ensure that employees feel motivated and involved. It is crucial to achieve future business success, ”says Fredrik Hallenborg, Nordic Manager at Verizon Business. “Here it is important to support the employees in their personal and professional development. Our results show that competence development is a key area among 75% of the managers surveyed. They also believe that digital skills have become even more important after the pandemic struck. The pandemic has also forced us to realize that we need to deal with problems with agility and adaptability while learning to manage business risks based on what is reasonable and in a way that allows the company to develop even under the new circumstances.
The report also shows that just over three quarters (76%) mention adaptability as a key competence together with problem solving (72%) and risk management (72%).
A look to the future
The most important thing we take with us from the report is that companies cannot afford to focus only on what is happening today. The clear message from the respondents in the survey is that better technical knowledge, investing in people and at the same time changing the work culture will not only make companies more robust, it will make them more profitable in the future.
“Leaders need to think about what the company has done well and where there is room for improvement, what new routines they may want to maintain, and what initiatives they want to continue, stop or be introduced,” says Fredrik Hallenborg. Finally, and more importantly, they need to move from words to action on how these points can be communicated, articulated, activated or woven into the organization so that they are ready when the crisis has subsided, to accelerate the recovery. Those who make this transformation in a thoughtful way and put their employees first, will be best equipped for success.
The work of the future will not only be driven by new technology. The culture of the organizations and the skills of the employees will be just as crucial for a successful digital transformation.

The report, which was produced in two rounds, identifies four key, interconnected dimensions that managers were asked to rank: technology, skills and behavior, leadership, and new ways of working. In January this year, 1,102 senior executives in various sectors and geographical areas were asked for their views. When the pandemic came, the researchers conducted a second survey among 664 senior executives to assess whether there were changes among opinions.
