Italian ambassador to Congo dead in attack on UN convoy

The policeman who lost his life was a member of the army, while during the attack a driver was also killed vehicle of the convoy.

A statement from the Italian Foreign Ministry said they were traveling “on a Monusco motorcade”, the blue helmet mission that has been stationed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for 20 years.

According to Reuters, the convoy was attacked around 10:15 a.m. (local time and Greek time) during abduction attempt by the attackers near the town of Kaniamahoro, a few kilometers north of the regional capital Goma.

So far it has not been made clear who was behind the attack, while dthere is no taking responsibility.

The Italian Foreign Minister, Luigi Di Maio, who is in Brussels for the work of the General Affairs Council, announced that returns hastily to Rome.

Condolences from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs

“Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias expressed his condolences to Italian Foreign Minister Luigi di Maio on the sidelines of the European Union Foreign Affairs Council,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

THE Luca Atanasio, 44, took over as ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo October 2019, having arrived in the country two years earlier as head of mission, according to his official biography.

In the diplomatic branch entered in late 2003, after studying at the School of Commerce at Luigi Bocconi University in Milan. He started in the Department of Economic Affairs before working on African issues and international cooperation.

Abroad, he was initially appointed head of the financial and commercial department of the Italian embassy in Bern (2006-2010), then consul general in Casablanca, Morocco (2010-2013). After passing through Rome, in 2015 he also served as a consultant at the Italian Embassy in Nigeria.
