Donald Trump has for several years opposed a request to release his tax returns from state prosecutors in New York. Prosecutors are investigating the former president and real estate mogul for various financial crimes.
The specific criminal charges are unclear, but The New York Times has previously reported that court documents indicate that the state prosecutor is investigating Trump and his company for tax and insurance offenses.
Refused to give out
The decision by the US Supreme Court is final and a major defeat for Trump, who has fought with beaks and claws to keep his tax returns secret.
During the 2016 presidential election campaign – and during the four years he was president – Trump refused to release his declarations. This is something that goes against the tradition, as all presidential candidates in the United States since the 1970s have submitted their declarations.
Several criminal investigations
Trump is currently the subject of several criminal investigations, of which the one led by New York state prosecutors is the most far-reaching. Trump’s stubborn opposition to handing over his declarations has fueled rumors about what the real estate mogul has to hide.
In late September 2020, The New York Times published several high-profile articles based on a number of Trump statements that had been leaked to the newspaper. It was revealed that Trump only paid $ 750 in federal income tax in 2016, partly because he reported huge losses.
