“Only a fool could have painted it”: Mysterious inscription in the famous painting The Scream was written by Munch

Words “Only a fool could have painted it,” are written in pencil in the upper left corner of the canvas. New tests by the Norwegian National Museum have confirmed that these words were written by the artist himself, reports the British BBC.

The original painting, first seen in Munch’s hometown of Oslo in 1893, has become a radical and timeless symbol of human anxiety. The influence of this image goes all the way to the Hollywood Scream horror series from the 90s and to modern emotions.

The artwork will be exhibited next year at a new museum in the Norwegian capital, which will open next year.

Font analysis

Art critics have long speculated whether the record in the painting was written by an outraged viewer or by Munch, who had had mental health problems all his life. After analyzing the manuscript with the help of technology and comparing it with the artist’s diaries and letters, muzej concluded that the words were written by a painter.

“The font is undoubtedly Munch’s,” said museum curator Mai Britt Guleng, adding: “Both the font and the events that took place in 1895, when Munch first showed the painting in Norway, point in the same direction.”

Public speculation about Munch’s mental state

The canvas provoked strong criticism and public speculation about Munch’s mental state at the time it was created. It is evident from the painter’s diaries that he was greatly affected by this, so the researchers conclude that he attributed the said sentence to the painting at that time.

Attacks of depression were experienced by both Munch’s father and his sister, and the artist was finally hospitalized after a nervous breakdown in 1908. His mother and older sister died before he turned 14, his father died 12 years later, and another sister was admitted to asylum with bipolar disorder.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a deep sense of anxiety that I’ve been trying to express in my art,” wrote Munch and continued: “Without that anxiety and illness, I would be like a ship without a rudder.”
