Slovak Foreign Minister Ivan Korczok told reporters after arriving at an EU Council meeting at the level of foreign ministers on Monday that he intends to ask EU partner countries to hand over surplus coronavirus vaccines to his country, where the epidemiological situation is tragic. “There is a tragic situation with the coronavirus in Slovakia,” he said. “The republic has the highest number of deaths (as a result of COVID-19 among the EU countries in terms of population).”
Slovakia is in dire need of coronavirus vaccines. Their critical shortcoming leads to an increase in the number of infected British strains of coronavirus, which is spreading rapidly throughout the country, and increased mortality of its inhabitants. “I will ask (colleagues at the meeting) that their countries hand over surplus vaccines to Slovakia. Slovakia (vaccines) needs it the most (EU member states), ”said the head of Slovak diplomacy.
According to the Slovak Ministry of Health, the total number of infected people in the country with a population of about 5.5 million since the beginning of the epidemic was 292 143. From October 1, 2020, the country was restored to the state of emergency during the first wave of the pandemic. On December 26 last year, vaccination against coronavirus began in the country. At the moment, 267,777 people have been vaccinated. The country receives vaccines manufactured by the American company Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech, as well as the American company Moderna.
According to WHO statistics, there are 292,143 cases and 6,505 deaths in Slovakia.
