On August 7, 2019, thieves stole a diamond worth over 4.5 million from a salon at the luxury Martinez Hotel in Cannes. The Romanians acted according to the method of exchanging currency, in which they took advantage of the inattention of the one who wanted to change money, and put newspaper on them instead of money.
The owner of the jewelry, a Russian citizen, was first convinced to receive in a hotel salon a buyer, a 53-year-old woman, who presented herself as an expert in diamonds. The woman asked those accompanying the seller to leave the room, then, at one point, set a price and put the diamond box in the bag.
The seller asked the woman to put the diamond box back on until the money reached the account.
The diamond of 20 million euros
After stealing the diamond from Cannes, on January 2, 2020, the gang of thieves tricked the owner of a 20 million euro diamond in Barcelona.
This time, a man pretended to be a specialist and managed to convince the owner to allow him to evaluate the diamond for an interested buyer. Before opening the box containing the diamond, the thief asked to be allowed to check the security seal. At that moment he managed to take advantage of the owner’s inattention, took the diamond and left the room saying that he had to notify the buyer on whose behalf he had come.
The owner realized that he had been robbed only after the thief had disappeared, when he realized that the diamond was no longer in the box.
