German Foreign Minister Heiko Mas stated that he would support the introduction of sanctions against certain persons in Russia due to the detention of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, but he emphasized that the dialogue with Russia should be preserved.
– We will talk about Russia, especially about the incident with Navalny, how Russia treats him. Immediately after the poisoning, we made it clear that we were not ready to put up with violations of international law and imposed sanctions. Today, we will discuss whether we will order new sanctions to be prepared for Russia, especially due to the Navalny verdict and the fact that it is closed – Mas said at the beginning of the summit of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
The minister added that he is in favor of preparing new sanctions.
– I am in favor of issuing an order to prepare a list of sanctions against certain persons – he added.
– At the same time, we should look for a way, how to continue the dialogue with Russia. We need Russia to resolve many international conflicts. That is why it will be the subject of talks – how to preserve a constructive dialogue with Russia, even when the relations between the EU and Russia, obviously, are at the lowest point – said Mas.
According to him, the ministers will also discuss the situation in Myanmar after the military coup. Mas emphasized that the EU expects diplomatic measures to help resolve the political situation in that, but he did not rule out the introduction of sanctions as an “ultimate measure”.
