Bulgaria has given up staged vaccination against COVID-19. The surprise of the authorities in Sofia after three days – International

Lack of interest in COVID-19 vaccination among a large part of the Bulgarian population has led the Sofia government to abandon the staged vaccination strategy and offer the vaccine to anyone who wants to be vaccinated, a decision that has led to significant growth. of the number of immunized persons, the EFE and DPA agencies report on Monday.

After Prime Minister Boiko Borisov ordered vaccination centers to be opened to everyone on Friday, about 33,000 people had been vaccinated in the past three days, up from 90,000 in the previous seven weeks, with Bulgaria now reaching about 1 percent. 7% of the vaccinated population, the smallest in Europe.

In a message announcing the abandonment of the staged vaccination strategy against COVID-19, Borisov lamented that only about 10% of those who applied to be vaccinated, according to the stage in which they were found, showed up. at vaccination centers on the date they were scheduled.

Before changing its strategy, Bulgaria was in the third and fourth phases of the vaccination process, namely the vaccination of people over the age of 65, security workers and those in key sectors. According to polls, about half of Bulgarians refuse vaccination against COVID-19, and another 23% still wonder if they will be vaccinated.

On the other hand, Bulgaria has decided to use all available doses of vaccine, with no reservations for the booster, as it anticipates an increase in vaccine supplies in March. The largest amount of vaccine ordered by the Bulgarian government is from the one produced by AstraZeneca, 4.5 million doses, compared to 3 million doses of Pfizer / BioNTech and 460,000 Moderna.

On the other hand, the Bulgarian Ministry of Health ordered that the vaccination centers be opened 24 hours a day on the weekend. In turn, Prime Minister Borisov said that “teams (mobile vaccinations) must reach people who want to be vaccinated even in the smallest and most isolated areas ”, while Health Minister Kostadin Anghelov assured that logistical measures are being taken for this.
