According to them, the vaccine developed jointly by Pfizer and BioNTech reduces the risk of hospitalization by 85% after four weeks, and the one created by scientists from the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca – by 94%. In addition, it was found that in the group of people over 80 – who are most at risk of COVID-19 – hospitalizations fell by 81%.
Researchers from the Scottish government agency Public Health Scotland and five universities there compared data on the number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 after receiving the first dose of the vaccine with those who were not vaccinated and were hospitalized. Data on 1.14 million people who were vaccinated in Scotland between December 8 and February 15 was analyzed. Of this number, just over 8,000 were hospitalized due to COVID-19. people.
– These results are very encouraging and give us great reasons to be optimistic for the future. We now have evidence from all over the country that vaccination protects against hospitalizations for COVID-19, said research leader Prof. Aziz Sheikh.
These are the first data on vaccine efficacy in the UK that are based not on tests but on people actually vaccinated. Similar data should be published soon on vaccination effectiveness in England.
The greater effectiveness of AstraZeneca is due to the fact that the effects of the vaccines after four weeks have been studied, in which extending the interval between the first and second doses improves it, and according to Pfizer / BioNTech, the maximum effectiveness of their product is achieved when the interval between doses is three weeks. The British government has decided to extend the interval between the administration of the first and second dose of vaccines in order to give as many people the first dose as soon as possible.
