Syria announces permission to use the Russian Sputnik-V vaccine against Covid-19 on its soil

The Syrian embassy in Moscow announced on Monday 22/22 that Syria had authorized the use of the Russian Sputnik-V vaccine against Covid-19 on its soil.

“The Syrian Arab Republic has completed all measures to register for the Sputnik-V vaccine and has authorized its use on its territory,” the Russian Itar-Tass news agency quoted an embassy statement. Syria, which has been in war since 2011, has benefited from the great and decisive military support of Russia, which is also providing it with humanitarian aid. Officially, the areas controlled by the Syrian regime have recorded 15,179 cases of Covid-19 since the start of the outbreak, including 998 deaths. And the Kurdish-controlled territories in the northeast of the country recorded 8,600 cases and 311 deaths, while the opposition areas in the northwest of the country recorded 21,121 cases and 408 deaths.

The Russian vaccine, whose effectiveness was initially questioned by informed circles, was recently recognized for its effectiveness in a study published in the medical journal “The Lancet” and approved by independent experts. The vaccine is now licensed in 30 countries. The Russian authorities are trying to conclude agreements to produce the vaccine locally, instead of exporting it, due to the lack of sufficient capabilities to meet the first national demand for them. In December, Syria joined the WHO’s Kovacs initiative to help the poorest countries. The goal of the Health Organization, UNICEF and the Gavi Vaccine Program are to secure vaccine doses for at least 20% of the Syrian people by 2021.
