This NASA Perseverance Helicopter Calls Earth from Mars Page all


KOMPAS.com- The mission of the United States space agency (NASA) did not only send its robot explorer, Perseverance, to Mars. This Rover is also accompanied by Ingenuity, a smart helicopter who is also on the same mission on the Red Planet.

According to NASA, the Ingenuity helicopter is a well-tested and well-tested Perseverance rover companion and travel companion.

“If successful in this mission, Ingenuity will be the first helicopter to fly on another planet,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate. CNN, Monday (22/2/2021).

Last Thursday, NASA’s Perseverance rover successfully landed on the surface of Mars after being launched on July 30, 2020.

The spacecraft has also sent some impressive photos of the planet Mars to Earth.

These photos have shown that the Perseverance robot has successfully landed safely on the surface of the planet and is ready to phase ‘checkout‘before embarking on a journey across the planet Mars.

Ingenuity’s Helicopter is calling home

The NASA team for the first time heard the reports that this intelligent helicopter delivered directly from Mars.

The Perseverance explorer robot is about the size of an SUV and has an Ingenuity tucked in its stomach. The helicopter only weighs about 4 pounds or about 2 kg.

The Ingenuity helicopter carried by Perseverance can make telephone calls to homes through exploration by sending data back through NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter which acts as a communication link between Mars and Earth.

NASA, 2020 Perseverance, the intelligent third-generation rover in artistic illustrations, has landed safely in the ancient Jezero crater delta, Mars.

The spacecraft has been orbiting the planet Mars since 2006.

“Ingenuity, the Mars Helicopter I brought with me, works as expected. Right now, I’m loading it up, but once I put it down, it will only depend on the solar panels. If you survive a very cold Martian night, the team will conduct a flight experiment, “wrote NASA in the Perseverance twitter account.

“There are two big items we are looking for in the data,” said Tim Canham, head of Mars Ingenuity Helicopter operations at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in a statement.

The data sought include, among other things, the status of Ingenuity’s battery charge as well as confirmation that the base station is operating as designed.

Mars’ cold temperature challenge

In addition, it ordered the heaters to be turned off and to keep Ingenuity’s helicopter electronics in an accessible condition.

“Both appear to be working well. With this positive report, we will move forward with recharging the helicopter batteries,” he added.

Ingenuity needs to ignite and store energy, so that it can warm itself and maintain other vital functions during the cold night on Mars after exploring the surface of this red planet.

At night, the surface temperature of Mars is very cold. The temperature of the planet can drop very low to minus 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

Therefore, it is important to maintain proper battery function and performance conditions, if the helicopter is to survive the cold Martian climate before attempting any flight tests later.

NASA has prepared a flight schedule for this helicopter.

At least five flights are planned to take place during the 31 day period after the rover finds the ‘helipad’, or a good flat place to place Ingenuity.

As long as Ingenuity is with Perseverance, this helicopter can increase its battery power. This helicopter is equipped with six lithium-ion batteries.

After being released from Perseverance, the battery will be charged by solar panels attached to the helicopter.

Ingenuity’s first flight will be short, only about 20 seconds hovering over the planet’s surface.

Although the flight is short, this will be a historic moment for an exploration mission to the red planet.

NASA’s Perseverance mission to Mars is also an experiment and demonstration technology, leading to the development of helicopters that can be reconnaissance and rover, as well as human missions to Mars in the future.
