As of February 22, Cambodia had recorded a total of 78 Covid-19 infections in the third outbreak of the disease in the country, also known as the “community event on February 20”.
On February 20, Cambodia suddenly recorded 32 cases of Covid-19 infection in Phnom Penh, most of which were Chinese.
On February 21, the Phnom Penh outbreak recorded 15 new cases of Covid-19, but the number of people infected with the virus increased more and more as authorities expanded tracing.
Cambodian officials said the skyrocketing number of cases after only a short time showed that the outbreak was a serious threat to the country. Most of the new Covid-19 infections are Chinese.
Prime Minister Hun Sen commented, the new outbreak is an “unprecedented outbreak of disease in the community” and urged people not to discriminate against the Chinese.
“The current situation is very bad. However, we should not discriminate against the Chinese people, ”said Mr. Hun Sen.
The Khmer Times said that the outbreak of the disease in the capital Phnom Penh was mainly related to the incident with four Chinese people infected with Covid-19 but escaping from the quarantine.
The residential area of Koh Pich – where many new Covid-19 infections were found in Phnom Penh – has been blocked. Residents must stay indoors for at least 14 days.
While Cambodian health officials work hard to track down and control the outbreak, some Chinese experts say that the latest outbreak of Covid-19 in Phnom Penh is unlikely to turn out of control.

“Some Chinese who entered Cambodia brought Covid-19 with them. They may or may not be present. A super spread of Covid-19 could happen if these people escaped from the isolation ward and gathered in large crowds. Fortunately, however, Cambodia has quite hot weather. Virus activity weakens quickly and the outbreak can be easily extinguished. The spread in small population clusters is unlikely to become a worrying outbreak, “said Yang Zhanqiu, deputy director of the Department of Pathogen Biology at Wuhan University.
According to the Global Times, Mr. Yang’s judgment is quite consistent with the disease situation in Cambodia. The country has witnessed many episodes of Covid-19 infection in the community, but as of February 22, Cambodia had only recorded a total of 568 viral infections.
“Despite the advantage that the average temperature is always high, Cambodia still needs to implement effective quarantine measures. Chinese citizens not only in Cambodia but in other countries should cooperate and abide by local quarantine regulations, ”Mr. Yang said.
On February 20, the Chinese embassy in Cambodia asked its citizens to strictly abide by the quarantine regulations when coming to another country.
“It is illegal to escape from the isolation ward or the treatment center after testing positive for the virus”, the Chinese embassy announced.
