“Mum get up … Mum” , can we hear two little girls, one covered in blood, screaming next to their mother, lying on the sidewalk and injured in the explosion, in a video filmed by a local journalist.
“At around 4:22 pm, savage terrorists detonated a mine (in) Kabul. The driver of the police vehicle (targeted) and a street child were killed, and five other people including a woman and two children were injured.” , said Ferdaws Faramarz, spokesman for the police in the capital.
“The children are being treated in hospital for minor injuries. Unfortunately, the mother was seriously injured.” , he clarified, referring to the video.
Recorded just after the explosion, the video went viral within hours. She shows, through smoke and dust, inert bodies on the tar, and these two granddaughters beside their unconscious mother. “Mum can you hear me?” one of them moans as the woman’s body is taken to a car.
“It must stop”
The attack has not been claimed, but Afghan forces are the primary targets of the Taliban, who attack them daily. The insurgent spokesman, however, said the explosion “has nothing to do” with the Taliban.
The video immediately made Afghan internet users react, outraged and horrified, using the hashtag “Mom, get up” written in Dari language. “Unbearable to look at this mother and her children like that “, reacted Ejaz Malikzada on Twitter.
“How can those who do this look at themselves in the mirror when we see children crying in front of their hurt mother? This must STOP.”said Fawzia Koofi, a member of the Kabul negotiating delegation to the Taliban peace talks.
Violence on the rise
Violence in Afghanistan has increased in recent months, despite the negotiations initiated since September in Qatar, which have so far failed to produce any significant results. In the capital, explosions are almost daily, and in the countryside, fighting rages on.
Targeted killings of journalists, rights defenders, judges and politicians have also become more and more frequent. Washington and Kabul blamed them on the Taliban, who deny being involved.
Sunday’s incident comes as the new administration of President Joe Biden is due to announce in the coming days its decision on the military withdrawal from the country planned by May, according to the historic agreement reached in February 2020 in Doha by the States- United and the Taliban.
The US contingent was reduced to 2,500 soldiers in early 2021, but Mr. Biden’s government has signaled its willingness to review the US-Taliban agreement, in particular to “assess” respect by the insurgents of their commitments.
