The former head of counterintelligence close to Gruevski also disappeared

Macedonian authorities are looking for former counterintelligence chief Sasho Miyalkov, who disappeared while awaiting sentencing. Miyalkov is considered the closest person to former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, who also fled and has already been granted asylum in Hungary.

The former director of the Security and Counterintelligence Department, Miyalkov, has been missing since Sunday noon, and police have failed to hand him the court decision to place him under house arrest.

Special forces are monitoring his home in Skopje’s expensive Kapiscec district and the Marriot Hotel in the center of the Macedonian capital, where he is staying and where he was last seen. Cars and road arteries are being checked, but so far there are no results from his search.

Authorities say he is in danger of absconding ahead of the verdict he is expected to receive in the Tvardina-Target case on Friday. Miyalkov is one of the accused for illegal wiretapping of over 20,000 citizens in the period from 2008 to 2015.

According to the indictment, 4,286 telephone numbers for which there were no court orders were monitored through three interception systems. Among the eavesdroppers are politicians, family members, journalists, lawyers, prosecutors, mayors and others.

According to his defense, however, Miyalkov is absolutely innocent. He did not order wiretapping, nor did he just listen to conversations.

In the case, Miyalkov could receive an effective sentence of 13 years in prison.

Sasho Miyalkov is considered the most influential person during the regime of Nikola Gruevski and one of the richest people. He was detained as soon as Gruevski fled, and several lawsuits were filed against him, including election fraud.

Until recently, Miyalkov was a member of the leadership of the opposition VMRO-DPMNE.

He led the counterintelligence from 2006 to May 12, 2015 and is believed to have controlled processes in politics, the judiciary and business.

According to local and Serbian media, he is also influential among criminal groups in the Balkans.

Miyalkov is Gruevski’s cousin and the son of Yordan Miyalkov, the first interior minister of the independent Republic of Macedonia, who died in December 1991 in Serbia.
