The attack took place near the border with Rwanda and Uganda. Initial reports suggest the attack was a kidnapping attempt.
In January 2019, Congo experienced its first peaceful democratic transfer of power since independence in 1960, following the election of President Felix Tshisekedi. He succeeded the powerful Joseph Kabila in a contested election, marked by accusations of widespread fraud and suspicion.
The resource-rich nation has been crushed by civil strife in recent years.
The UN peacekeeping mission, known by its acronym MONUSCO, is in the process of reducing its presence, which currently numbers 15,000 troops.
