A new BBC documentary revealed that former US President Donald Trump offered North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to board Air Force One to return to Pyongyang, after the Hanoi summit that brought them together two years ago.
Kim and Trump first engaged in controversy and exchanged threats, before their relationship became overwhelmed by the warmth to hold summits that attracted great attention, and Trump expresses his love for Kim.
However, no progress was achieved, as negotiations between them reached a dead end after their meeting in Hanoi ended in a dispute over the issue of sanctions relief and concessions that Pyongyang would be willing to offer in return.
According to a BBC documentary entitled “Trump sweeps the world,” “(the US president) shocked even the most experienced diplomats,” when he offered Kim to board the US presidential plane after the 2019 summit in Vietnam.
Had Kim accepted the offer, he would have boarded the plane, accompanied by some of those close to him, that would have entered North Korean airspace, which raises many question marks on the security front. But Kim turned down the offer.
“President Trump has offered Kim to get on his Air Force One,” Matthew Pottinger, chief expert on Asia at the Trump National Security Council, told the BBC.
“The president learned that Kim arrived on a train journey that lasted for several days through China to Hanoi, and the president said,” I can drive you to your country within two hours if you like. “Kim refused.
At Trump’s first summit in Singapore in 2018, Kim boarded a China Airlines flight as Beijing struggled to keep North Korea within its sphere of influence.
During the Singapore summit, Trump showed the North Korean leader the inside of the presidential car, a Cadillac valued at one and a half million dollars, and is known as the “monster”, in an expression of courtship between them.
But Kim said last month that the United States is the “biggest enemy” of his country that possesses nuclear weapons, adding that “(Washington’s) policy toward North Korea will never change,” regardless of who is in power.
North Korean media has yet to mention the new US President Joe Biden by name.
