The janaza of eminent Turkish scholar and muhaddith Muhammad Amin Siraj has been completed.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other Turkish ministers, members of parliament and other dignitaries attended the funeral on Sunday (February 21st).
In a short speech before the janaza, President Erdogan spoke of his long acquaintance with Sheikh Siraj. He also said that he used to visit Shaykh at different times and listen to his speeches and instructions.
After the janaza, Erdogan himself carried Shaykh Siraj’s cot and took part in burial at the grave adjacent to the Al Fateh Mosque in Istanbul.
Turkish scholar Sheikh Amin Siraj passed away on February 19 (Friday). He was one of the leading recluse scholars of the twentieth century in reforming secular Turkey.
Shaykh Amin Siraj memorized the Holy Qur’an at home when he was only six years old. At that time, reading Arabic and Qur’an was banned in Turkey. Sheikh Siraj’s father, Hafez Mustafa Afendi, was sentenced to six months in prison for teaching his children Arabic and the Holy Qur’an.
In 1940, Shaikh Siraj went to Istanbul to study. He was educated for many days under the supervision of Imam Omar Affandi of the famous Al Fateh Mosque. Then Shaykh Sulaiman recited Sahih Bukhari from Afendi and got the first ‘ijazat’ or approval of the hadith.
In 1950, Sheikh Siraj overcame many obstacles and moved to the world-famous Al-Azhar University in Egypt for higher education. He studied various subjects with the best Islamic figures in Egypt and Syria, including the famous scholars of the time, Shaykh Jahed al-Kawsari and Mustafa Sabri Affandi. In 1960, Sheikh Amin Siraj returned to Turkey and devoted himself to the spread of Islamic education.
Shaykh Amin Siraj was one of the secluded scholars who played a major role in the spread of Islam in the secularism of modern Turkey. This great thinker of Turkey kept himself involved in the reconstruction of the Muslim society including writing, editing, translation, teaching and invitation. Shaykh Siraj translated Tafseer’s book ‘Fi Jilalil Qur’an’ by Syed Qutb into Turkish.
