“Medical tests, a quick way to get sick … out of fear.
I usually forget about the phone over the weekend, so I thought about what was worse when I saw countless messages received from a friend, who was alarmed by the results of the analysis. I thought he was in trouble, that it was something acute that needed urgent action. On closer inspection, I found only high levels of creatinine, urea and uric acid. Because I know that men have a light dose of hypochondria, I called him to assure him that everything was fine, that there was nothing serious. And I did well, because the man had the impression that his liver and kidneys had given up at the same time, it was so scary.
The only arguments that reassured him (because he didn’t believe me when I told him he was healthy) were the tables with the normal values for the blood tests used in France. You may not believe it, my dears, but “normality” is also defined differently from one country to another and from one era to another. This is how in the last 20 years the “normal” level of cholesterol has decreased from 220 to 200mg / dl regardless of age … as a consequence a large part of the population is voluntarily / in need of anti-cholesterol medication.
But let’s not deviate from the subject: from the analysis bulletin it results that the normal values for urea are between 19.3 and 42.9 mg / dl. Also normal and also for urea, in France we have 2 categories of values, depending on age: 18-45mg / dl for 18-55 years and 20-50mg / dl for those over 55 years (multiplied by 100 for the transformation from g / l in mg / dl). Not only does the level of urea in the blood increase with age, but also cholesterol, blood sugar and other constants, a natural phenomenon that occurs as a result of aging, as the function of certain organs decreases. It is clear that we do not look at 60 as we did at 20 and our body is not as efficient. But this does not mean that we are sick, but only slightly more “tired”.
Speaking of “fatigue”, the liver and kidneys get terribly tired when we have a high-protein diet, as is fashionable now. Silhouette has unfortunately become more important than health and everyone eats excess protein for the simple reason that they are difficult to turn into fat. But they are also difficult to metabolize, and the liver and kidneys will be overworked – so don’t be surprised that urea, uric acid and creatinine will increase, all of which are witnesses to protein breakdown.
If you have, like the gentleman in question, tests that look similar, keep in mind that the level of urea in the blood has physiological variations as follows:
-increases by 20% in adults over 55 years
-is 5% lower in women
-decreases by 30% to 60% during the term pregnancy
-increases by 20% in case of prolonged physical exertion
-increases by 50-80% in case of hyperprotein diet
-decreases dramatically in case of prolonged fasting.
In other words, we must not force ourselves into rigid values, but medical tests must be adapted and interpreted for our individual situation. As for the analysis bulletins and the reference values, “how many huts, so many habits” … Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to adapt / detail them, so that patients don’t get scared so easily / quickly from a value slightly over the limits .
In the end, for the friend in question I had only one observation: “leave it behind the meat and put your hand and eat fish !!” That total cholesterol is perfect in vain, when HDL-cholesterol is a shame. This is the advantage when you are a nutritionist, you guess the human life after the refrigerator “, writes the nutritionist Mihaela Bilic on a social network.
