Italian ambassador killed in Congo

An ambush was organized on UN vehicles. As a result of the attack, a soldier of the Carabinieri corps also died.

The Italian Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Luca Attanasio, was shot dead in an attack by unknown assailants. An Italian carabinieri who accompanied him was killed along with the ambassador, ANSA reports.

The incident took place in the Congolese city of Goma. A convoy of UN vehicles, one of which was carrying a diplomat, was ambushed.

The reason for the attack is unknown. It is believed that the attackers intended to take hostages.

The attack was repulsed with the help of government forces that arrived in time.

Attanasio has headed the Italian Embassy in the Congo since October 2019.

Before that, we wrote that 26 people were killed in the Congo during the attack on the village. Some civilians were shot dead, and most of the militants were killed with a machete.

We also add that the Ukrainian peacekeeper, Senior Lieutenant Alexander Mulyavko, was killed in the Congo. He served in the 11th separate army aviation brigade Kherson.
