Relocation instead of demolition – owner relocates two-story villa
In San Francisco, a 139-year-old mansion was moved several hundred meters. To do this, parking meters, traffic lights and traffic signs had to be removed, trees cut and power lines disconnected. And all for one reason.
UTo save it from possible demolition, a homeowner in San Francisco had his 139-year-old Victorian mansion converted. With the help of semi-trailers, the entire building was brought several hundred meters to its new location, as US media reported on Sunday.
The streets were lined with onlookers as the green-colored house was moved from Franklin Street to Fulton Street that morning.
In order to get the approximately 24-meter-long, two-story villa through the streets, parking meters, traffic lights and traffic signs were removed, trees were cut and power lines were disconnected.
The unusual move had become necessary because a multi-storey apartment building is to be built on the property on which the house previously stood, as it was said.
The owner, a local realtor, had the implementation of the house with its six bedrooms and three bathrooms cost a lot, reported the “San Francisco Chronicle”: A total of around 400,000 dollars (about 330,000 euros), half split between permits and transport costs. 15 different city authorities alone should have approved the action.
“I’m used to waking up with the house every morning”
Nevertheless it is worth it, said the responsible transporter of the newspaper. “Look at the house, it’s historic, original wood. You can’t get that kind of wood today. “He’ll miss the sight of the building from 1882, said a resident at the previous address on television:” I’m used to waking up with the house every morning and to say good night to him in the evening. “
The Victorian houses built in the 19th century and the buildings in the Spanish colonial style add to the special architectural flair of San Francisco and, like the Golden Gate Bridge, are among the tourist attractions of the Californian city.
