The group of experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) who visited China to study the origin of the covid-19 pandemic will recommend “deeper” tracking of contacts from the first known patient.
According to American television CNN, experts also want to know more about the supply chain of nearly a dozen traders in the Huanan market in Wuhan City, which is believed to have played a key role in the spread of the disease, at the end of 2019.
The WHO panel’s recommendations will follow several key points of the investigation, according to sources familiar with the preliminary report cited by CNN.
First, experts will request more details about the patient’s contact history treated on December 8, 2019 in Wuhan – the first case confirmed by Chinese scientists.
He is an office worker, in his 40s, who has not traveled, nor has a history of contacts with others infected.
This patient was with the WHO team and, at the end of the meeting, indicated that his parents visited “a local fresh produce market in Wuhan”, not the Huanan market.
Peter Daszak, a member of the WHO team, noted that Chinese scientists ensured that the patient’s parents tested negative for the disease, but did not appear to have tracked their contacts in that market.
Independent scientists told CNN that Chinese experts should have carried out further investigation into the origins of the virus several months ago.
Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser to US President Joe Biden, said on Sunday that China had not provided “sufficiently important data” about the origin and subsequent spread of the coronavirus.
“They are about to publish a report on the origins of the pandemic in Wuhan, China, which we have doubts about, because we do not believe that China has made enough data available on the origins, on how the pandemic started in China, and then around the world, “the official told CBS News.
On February 9, the World Health Organization (WHO) mission, which investigated the origin of the new coronavirus in Wuhan, ruled out the possibility that the virus originated in a laboratory.
“I am not in a position to say how covid-19 came into this world. I am only in a position to ask WHO to do its job,” he said.
