Algiers – The forces of the Pacte de l’Alternative Démocratique (PAD), a collective of several political parties, personalities and representatives of Algerian civil society, stressed that “the popular demand for radical democratic change is far from being heard” and that “the authoritarian counter-revolution does not let go” in the country.
In a press release, the PAD said it “recorded with revolt the stubborn persistence of power in imposing an agenda aimed at restoring the authoritarian system through a new electoral coup backed by multiple patronage subterfuges and closely supervised by the usual police apparatus” .
For this collective, “the salvation of the national state and the people cannot stem from the alignment of civil society organizations and political parties on a roadmap which aims to perpetuate the authoritarian system in place and renew the same processes and methods which ruined the country ”.
The PAD estimated that “the democratic solution passes through the final end of the repression and legal proceedings against political and citizen action, the total legal, moral and material rehabilitation of all political and opinion prisoners and the recovery immediate and unconditional public freedoms ”.
He denounced the keeping in prison of nearly a hundred prisoners of conscience, the torture in reprisal against the youth, the closure of the media and political fields going as far as the criminalization of partisan activity, which “cannot that feed the drift towards the worst ”.
Stressing that “the popular demand for radical democratic change is far from being heard”, the PAD indicated that Algerians “have the right to bring about their democratic revolution by all peaceful means, moreover written into the constitutions of the regime” .
“The strategy of repression and COVID 19 have not been right in the determination of the Algerian people to achieve peacefully and in unity, the objectives set out through the revolutionary process initiated in February 2019”, welcomed the PAD, formed in the wake of the popular movement and bringing together in particular the Workers ‘Party, the Socialist Workers’ Party, the Rally for Culture and Democracy, the Union for Change and Progress, the Democratic and Social Movement and the Front of Socialist Forces, as well as the Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights.
