The Minister of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq, Reber Ahmed, said that the party behind the targeting of Erbil airport and the headquarters of the International Coalition had been “identified,” noting that the perpetrators “infiltrated into the region in order to carry out their missile attacks.”
And revealing that the authorities “are waiting for Baghdad to arrest them,” he explained that “the attackers benefited from the good treatment of the security forces at the checkpoints and caused a security breach.”
He added, “This operation tells us that ISIS is not the only terrorist organization in the country, and there are other terrorist groups, and this requires us to work more jointly between the Kurdistan region, the federal government, the international coalition and all parties that fight terrorism in the country,” according to the Al-Hurra correspondent in Erbil..
Ahmed revealed the formation of “several committees to investigate the targeting process, including a joint committee between Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, and a committee that came from Baghdad to investigate the case.”
He continued, “We are currently waiting for the Iraqi government, which is responsible for implementing the decision, arresting the accused who are in areas outside the Kurdistan region’s authority, and handing them over to the judicial authorities to receive their fair penalty.”
The statements of the Minister of Interior in the regional government came during the inauguration ceremony of the new governor of Erbil, Umid Khoshnau, to succeed the late Firsat Sofi, who died as a result of his infection with Corona months ago..
In the middle of this month, Erbil was subjected to a missile attack, killing a contractor working with the US-led coalition, at Erbil airport, wounding five other members of the coalition (including an American soldier), and wounding at least three local civilians..
This attack is the second of its kind on Erbil. On September 30, a missile attack launched from eastern Mosul targeted Erbil Airport.
A group known as the “Awliya al-Dam Brigades” claimed responsibility for the Erbil attack.
At the time, security officials told “Agence France Presse” that the name of this group is just a “front” for well-known armed factions loyal to Iran that want the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq..
