ASSASSINATION – The daughters of African-American activist Malcolm X demanded, Saturday, February 20, the reopening of the investigation into his murder. They are based on new testimony implicating the police.
– The drafting of LCI
This new twist takes place 55 years, to the day, after the murder of Malcolm X. The daughters of this activist for the rights of African-Americans presented, during a press briefing on Saturday, February 20, a letter implicating the law enforcement in this case.
The document was written by a former New York police officer, now deceased, who accuses New York police and the FBI of complicity in the murder. This policeman, who was black and operated under cover, would claim to have approached, at the request of his hierarchy, the entourage of Malcolm X and to have trapped two of his bodyguards, arrested only a few days before the assassination.
The reopening of the investigation under study
More generally, the former police officer, who wanted his testimony to be made public only after his death, argues that law enforcement kept some aspects of the case secret.
On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X, or El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz of his real name, was therefore deprived of his two bodyguards during a speech in a Manhattan performance hall, before falling under the bullets of three shooters.
In February 2020, after the broadcast of a documentary on Netflix, Who Killed Malcolm X , Manhattan prosecutor Cyrus Vance had asked his teams to reexamine the case to determine whether the investigation should be reopened. Sunday February 21, this study was still ongoing according to a spokesperson for the prosecutor. The New York police, for their part, indicated that they communicated to the prosecutor’s office “all archives related to this case“. The NYPD”remain ready to contribute to this review in any way“, she added.
