The Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo has been killed, the BBC reports.
Luca Athanasio was killed during an attack on a UN convoy near Goma, in the area of ​​Virunga National Park, BNT reported.
His death was confirmed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
An Italian soldier and another man were killed in the attack, the statement said.
European Council President Charles Michel wrote on Twitter that the second victim of the attack was a serviceman. Security and peace are needed, the EU supports the DRC and the people of the country, he added.
The news is very worrying, the EU Foreign Affairs Council will be informed of details by the Italian Foreign Ministry, a spokesman said. EU foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels today.
The attack is believed to have been for the purpose of kidnapping.
Many armed groups are operating around Virunga Park in the eastern part of the country on the border with Rwanda and Uganda.
