Suu Kyi must be released: British Foreign Secretary

Myanmar’s junta government must release democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. In a speech to the UN Human Rights Council on Monday, British Foreign Secretary Dominic Robb will formally state his country’s position. The BBC, a UK-based news outlet, reported the news.

In a speech to the United Nations, Dominique Rabb called on the Burmese military to step down, respecting the democratic process.

The British Foreign Secretary will also raise the issue of two protesters killed by security forces in the town of Mandalay on Saturday. Meanwhile, in a post on Twitter, he said that firing on peaceful protesters was not acceptable.

The situation in Myanmar has deteriorated further since the military coup, with human rights abuses taking place. The junta government has tried to suppress dissent by overthrowing the democratic government. In that case, the United Kingdom, along with its international partners, would consider taking further action against the Burmese military authorities.

According to the BBC, the British Foreign Secretary will also address the Rohingya issue in his speech to the UN Human Rights Council. There, he says, the country’s current crisis poses a greater risk to Myanmar’s other ethnic minorities, including the Rohingya.

Apart from the situation in Myanmar, the British Foreign Secretary will also discuss the China-Russia issue. China has called for UN investigators to be allowed to enter the country on an emergency basis to investigate human rights abuses in Chinese detention centers. He will also talk about the “disgraceful” imprisonment of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
