Italy’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo was killed – International

Italy’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio, has been killed in an attack targeting a United Nations convoy in East Africa, AFP reports.

His death was confirmed on Monday by the Italian Foreign Ministry: “With deep sadness, the Foreign Ministry confirms the death today in Goma of the Italian ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Luca Attanasio, and a military man.” According to a diplomatic source in Kinshasa, the diplomat was shot.

He was in a car that was part of a convoy of Monusco, the blue helmet mission present in the DRC for 20 years.

Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio, who was in Brussels for a meeting with his European counterparts, announced that he was returning to Rome.

Luca Attanasio, 43 years old and ambassador to the DRC since October 2019, had come to the African country two years earlier, as head of the mission.

He entered diplomacy at the end of 2003, after studying commerce at the Luigi Bocconi University in Milan.

He was the head of the economic and trade department at the Italian embassy in Bern (2006-2010), consul general in Casablanca, Morocco (2010-2013) and advisor to the Italian embassy in Nigeria in 2015.
