Nearly 9.5 tonnes of cannabis resin, concealed in a refrigerated truck, were seized near Rabat, and the driver of the vehicle was arrested, Moroccan police said on Monday.
This operation made it possible to intercept “a refrigerated truck carrying a total of 380 bales of drugs of approximately 9.5 tons concealed in a cargo of food products”, indicated the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) in a press release. .
The driver of the truck was arrested and a sum of 31,800 dirhams (nearly 2,900 euros) was seized, according to the same source. The public prosecutor opened an investigation “in order to determine all the local and international ramifications of this criminal activity,” said the DGSN press release.
Morocco is one of the main cannabis producing countries in the world, cultivated mainly in the mountainous region of Rif (north). The Moroccan authorities claim to make “intense and continuous efforts” to fight against drug trafficking. More than 217 tons of cannabis resin were seized in 2020 in the kingdom, according to official figures.
